Sympathy Flowers
If you know someone who has experienced the loss of
someone close to them, then sending flowers is a great
way to express your sympathy and offer comfort to the
bereaved. You can send your sympathy flowers to either
the funeral service or the bereaved family's home.
Sometimes it can be special to send flowers after the
funeral is over, so that people know you are still
thinking of them at that time.
When in doubt about what type of sympathy flowers you
should send and when, ask your florist. They have plenty
of experience with sympathy flowers, and can be a great
help in creating exactly the effect you want. Always
include a message card so that you can express your
thoughts and feelings. To help you choose exactly the

types of arrangements that are commonly available.
Flowers For The Family
Sending a bouquet of flowers is most appropriate if the
flowers are being delivered to the family's residence.
There are a huge range of floral designs available, but
stick to the more subdued flower colors and designs on
this occasion. You can also choose sympathy flowers that
are already in a vase, to make things simpler for the
recipients. Remember, the family is going to be occupied
on the day of the funeral, so flowers should be
delivered on either the days prior to or after the
funeral.
Another special touch can be to give the bereaved family
a peace lily. This is a green, indoor plant, with white
flowers. It's often chosen as a more lasting form of
sympathy flowers, and should be sent to the family’s
residence or given to them in person. Include a card
with your special sympathy message.
Funeral Flowers
Some of the flowers for a funeral are typically supplied
by the bereaved family, so let's look at those first. If
you plan to have an open casket service, then you can
choose from a range of inside casket pieces. These are
usually small bouquets of flowers, garlands or a small
wreath, and are placed on the inside lid of the casket.
The family also generally supplies a casket cover, and
so you should check before ordering this type of
arrangement. You can choose from quarter, half, or full
casket styles, so if the family already has a full
casket design there won't be room for any other casket
cover sympathy flowers. These can be quite expensive,
and must be ordered early as they can take a lot of time
to create.
The simplest, most standard type of sympathy flowers for
the funeral is a funeral basket. These are a good choice
because they can stand upright in their basket, and
don't need any type of vase or support. You can also opt
for a funeral spray, which is a larger arrangement made
using floral foam and supported by an easel. These are
usually delivered to the funeral service, and may also
be transported to the gravesite. Because this type of
arrangement is large and requires a lot of work, it
needs to be ordered a few days before the funeral. Your
florist can design your funeral spray in any shape you
choose, with a cross being a popular choice.
Wreaths are also a popular choice for sympathy flowers.
These are also generally attached to an easel of some
sort so they stand upright, and are appropriate for the
funeral service. Again, they may also be moved to the
gravesite. If you want something a little more personal,
you can choose a wreath that's heart shaped, rather than
the traditional circular wreath.
